5 Tips for Getting Used to Your New Hearing Amplifier

The Adjustment Period

Purchasing your first hearing amplifier is an exciting step toward clearer sound, but it's important to know that there is an adjustment period. When you first wear a sound amplifier, your brain needs time to relearn how to process sounds it may have been missing. Here are 5 tips to make the transition smooth and comfortable.

1. Start Slow in Quiet Environments

Don't wear your new amplifier to a crowded restaurant on day one. Start by wearing it at home in a quiet room for just a few hours a day. Practice listening to the hum of the refrigerator or the ticking of a clock. Gradually increase the time you wear it each day.

2. Practice Reading Aloud

Your own voice will sound different to you when wearing an amplifier. This is completely normal! To get used to it, try reading a book or newspaper aloud to yourself for 10-15 minutes a day.

3. Keep the Volume Low Initially

It's tempting to turn the volume all the way up immediately, but this can be overwhelming. Start at the lowest volume setting and slowly increase it only until sounds are comfortable, not loud.

4. Experiment with Different Ear Domes

Most ClearSound Direct amplifiers come with multiple sizes of silicone ear domes. A proper fit is crucial to prevent "feedback" (that annoying whistling sound). Take the time to try all the sizes to find the one that creates a comfortable seal in your ear canal.

5. Be Patient

It typically takes 2 to 4 weeks for your brain to fully adjust to the new sounds. Stick with it, follow a gradual schedule, and soon wearing your amplifier will feel completely natural.
